A/Prof Indika Alahakoon MBBS FRANZCOG DDU CMFM is a highly skilled Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with over 19 years’ experience in delivering babies. A/Prof Alahakoon has undergone further specialist training in Maternal Fetal Medicine for the management of high-risk pregnancies, and she is also a Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging specialist.

A/Prof Alahakoon consults obstetrics patients primarily at her rooms in the Specialist Medical Centre, Norwest Private Hospital in Bella Vista; but will also take appointments at the Centre for Women’s Ultrasound in Westmead. Also provided from both of these premises are her specialised obstetrics and gynaecology ultrasound services. A/Prof Alahakoon delivers at 3 hospital locations: Westmead Hospital, Westmead Private Hospital and Norwest Private Hospital.
Indika takes great satisfaction in guiding her patients through the pregnancy and childbirth experiences, regardless of the risk factor. As a mother of four beautiful children herself, she draws on her own experiences, along with her expert training and education, to provide the highest level of care and understanding for all of her patients. Her expertise is highly sought-after, due to her reputation as an obstetrician who is dedicated to her patients and their well-being from the start of pregnancy, through to delivery.
A/Prof Alahakoon’s initial medical training was undertaken at Sydney Medical School (part of the University of Sydney) where she graduated with first class honours. From there, she completed her specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, NSW.
Extensive experience with high-risk pregnancies
To further her knowledge in the field, A/Prof Indika then embarked upon training in managing high-risk pregnancies and has been a senior staff specialist and a qualified Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist (CMFM) at Westmead Hospital since 2005. Currently, she is the Head of Department in Maternal Fetal Medicine. As a result of all this training and hands-on experience, A/Prof Indika Alahakoon has a very high degree of knowledge and competency in managing normal and complicated pregnancies, and she continues to manage high-risk obstetric patients in the public sector.
Further study and academia
A/Prof Alahakoon holds an academic title at the University of Sydney as a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and has been involved in numerous research projects examining structural anomalies in the fetus, fetal growth restriction, stillbirth and pre-eclampsia. She has completed a PhD on the role of monocytes and angiogenic factors in the cause of fetal growth restriction and pre-eclampsia. In 2007, Indika was awarded the Ella Macknight Research Scholarship from the RANZCOG Research Foundation for this work.
